An Artist’s View of Horse and Hound

Foxhunting paintings to benefit the Museum of Hounds and Hunting North America

The visual excitement of foxhunting comes from the movement of horses and hounds in and out of the light and shadows of trees and hills, and from a mixture of fast action over timber and leisurely hacks through meadows. It is a fascinating subject to paint, and it is an honor to represent the community that preserves the history and tradition of mounted hunting while safeguarding the beautiful countryside.

The show will hang at the MHHNA in Middleburg, VA from September 11 through October 12. I hope you can join us at the opening reception on the evening of September 11, but you can view and purchase works from the show online at the MHHNA website via the link below.

I mount online and in-person shows regularly. You may contact me directly to buy paintings, keep up to date by following me on Facebook and Instagram, and if you are in or about the Greenspring Valley the area, reach out to schedule a studio visit. More about me here, my work, below.

Commissions

The tradition of Equestrian Sporting Art is grounded in commissioned work. The classic examples are the ‘mounted portrait’ and the ‘conformation portrait’. Historically, these have been rather stiff, formal, and highly detailed. My preference is for the informal and painterly. Much of what you see these days is traced from photographs and rendered in sharp detail. I never trace, and work from life when practical. My work is characterized by rich color and expressive brushwork.

Please inquire about a commission of a favorite horse or any other subject you wish to see expressed as a work of art. Prices are per project, but the following are baseline prices for equine subjects in a few standard sizes:

18x24 - $4000

20x24 - $5000

24x30 - $6000

30x40 - $8000

Official Artist of the National Steeplechase Association

I have had the pleasure of serving as the official artist for the NSA since I was commissioned in 2018 to paint the cover art for “American Steeplechasing,” 42nd edition, the annual publication of record for the sport. Since then, I have provided original paintings for the covers of five editions, with chapter headings featuring sketches from that season. I look forward each year to receiving my credentials and through the NSA and various race committees, have gained access to work on location.

Work from the season is featured at an annual art show to benefit the Temple Gwathmey Steeplechase Foundation. TGSF is the charitable arm of steeplechasing and the show helps fund programming. I helped expand the show to an online format with the formation of thesteeplechasegallery.org. The gallery hosts the annual show, featuring work by a growing group of other equine artists.

I would like to see an evolution from one artist into more of a program that introduces new artists to the experience of working live at the races. Truly a unique twist on the concept of drawing from life, and the interaction with fans is great fun, an added bonus that fosters the public’s appreciation of the sport.
