An Artist’s View of Horse and Hound
Foxhunting paintings to benefit the Museum of Hounds and Hunting North America
The visual excitement of foxhunting comes from the movement of horses and hounds in and out of the light and shadows of trees and hills, and from a mixture of fast action over timber and leisurely hacks through meadows. It is a fascinating subject to paint, and it is an honor to represent the community that preserves the history and tradition of mounted hunting while safeguarding the beautiful countryside.
The show will hang at the MHHNA in Middleburg, VA from September 11 through October 12. I hope you can join us at the opening reception on the evening of September 11, but you can view and purchase works from the show online at the MHHNA website via the link below.
I mount online and in-person shows regularly. You may contact me directly to buy paintings, keep up to date by following me on Facebook and Instagram, and if you are in or about the Greenspring Valley the area, reach out to schedule a studio visit. More about me here, my work, below.
Galleries
You can find my work through the following fine galleries:
Leipers Creek Gallery
Leipers Creek Gallery is in the charming hamlet of Leipers Fork, TN, a little southwest of Nashville, surrounded by horse farms and racing stables. I joined the gallery in early 2024 specially to add my Equine Sporting Art to their mix. Lisa Fox and Amy Smith arrange the gallery like an elegant home for a very comfortable experience viewing the work. Here are a few selections of my work on offer there.
Ready to Wear, 24x30, Oil on Canvas Board
High Def, 18x24, Oil on Canvas
Check and Diamonds, 16x12, Gouache
Red Fox Fine Art
Red Fox Fine Art is housed within the Red Fox Inn, the essential Hunt Country establishment in Middleburg, Virginia. Turner Reuter and his daughter Hannah Reuter Rothrock manage the gallery. Their emphasis has been on historic Sporting Art, but I am very pleased to have been added to the mix. The Inn and Gallery are worth a visit in their own right, and the artwork is displayed throughout the building. A selection of works on offer:
Gold Cup Outriders, 12x9, Gouache
Above the Valley, 32x42, Oil on Linen
Jailbreak, 20x24, Oil on Canvas
McBride Gallery
McBride Gallery is a landmark on Main Street in Annapolis, MD. Cynthia McBride offers a rich mix of subjects, with a slant towards Chesapeake themes. You will find my Equine subjects there, but I also add to the mix with other subjects I enjoy painting.
Tree to Table, 5x7, Gouache
Abundance of Riches, 24x18, Oil on Canvas
Kitchen Chickens, 12x16, Gouache
Yoicks!
Yoicks! is a singular establishment in the very center of the Hunt Country of the Elkridge Harford Hunt Club. You can find everything from hunt attire to antiques and fine art. Proprietor Michael Finney stirs it all together in a unique cottage interior setting. My work there is almost entirely related to the specific events surrounding the club on My Lady’s Manor. If you know, you know!
Elkridge-Harford Girls Gamboling Through the Gate, 11x14, Gouache
End of the Day, South Branch, 11x14, Gouache
Liquid Light on the Clubhouse Lawn, 6x8, Gouache

Commissions
The tradition of Equestrian Sporting Art is grounded in commissioned work. The classic examples are the ‘mounted portrait’ and the ‘conformation portrait’. Historically, these have been rather stiff, formal, and highly detailed. My preference is for the informal and painterly. Much of what you see these days is traced from photographs and rendered in sharp detail. I never trace, and work from life when practical. My work is characterized by rich color and expressive brushwork.
Please inquire about a commission of a favorite horse or any other subject you wish to see expressed as a work of art. Prices are per project, but the following are baseline prices for equine subjects in a few standard sizes:
18x24 - $4000
20x24 - $5000
24x30 - $7000
30x40 - $10,000
