“Portrait of a Tradition”
(A Note from the Artist)

   This show began with a conversation with St. James' Rector and my friend, Charlie Barton. I had begun to explore the subject of Foxhunting and Steeplechase in my work when he invited me to come see the Thanksgiving Day Hunt of 2007. It is a rich subject, and the collection of paintings that resulted attempts to express the course of events that morning, the depth of tradition and some of the personalities, Human, Equine and Canine that participated.

   My approach to painting can be best understood as a New American Impressionism. I am more concerned with the Spirit, Movement and Light of a scene than with the detail. My motto is “Expression without Description”. This does not excuse me from accurate drawing, and I hope that I have met the challenge of getting across the wonderful mix of legs and movement of the Horses and Hounds. It was a sunlit morning, and the fall color was high. I suggest you stand back a bit, and allow the brushmarks to assemble themselves into the patterns of color patches made by the light falling across the scene.

   Beside my artistic intent, this show hopes to bring together the Church and the Hunt communities by creating an occasion to see themselves from a new perspective. I hope you enjoy the show!
