The best way to paint a portrait is to work from life in a setting familiar to the subject. I like to schedule sittings at your home or other appropriate location to best capture the pose, mood and setting. Photography is used as a support, not a substitute for working from life.

Sittings are not uncomfortable and do not require long periods of time. Most sitters find the process engaging and enjoy the frequent breaks to see how the work is progressing. It is fine to talk, and other company in the room is welcome.

My direct approach uses expressive brushwork to suggest rather than describe the details. I aim for a fresh and vivid result.

The standard medium is oil on canvas with the dimensions of the canvas determined by the intended location of the portrait. The prices listed below are a guideline. Not included in the price are expenses for travel, framing, taxes or shipping. The final price will be determined after we meet to discuss the particular design of your portrait.

Please call to make an appointment. I look forward to showing you examples of my work and explaining how I proceed to create your portrait.

Sam Robinson offers commissioned paintings of interiors of favorite rooms, and views of houses and gardens. These subjects appear frequently in Sam's work. Commissions direct his enthusiasm for these motifs to a subject with personal meaning for you. Working from life is the ideal approach, but sketches and photography can serve as aids to a studio piece.

Please contact the artist to discuss your commission. Prices vary with the size and complexity of the scene. The following are guidelines:
Small$1,500
Medium$3,000
Large$6,000
