Equestrian
The coming year will be full of opportunities to continue exploring the world of Equestrian Sport. Situated as I am within a few miles of the best of Maryland's Hunt Country and only a couple of hours from Virginia and Pennsylvania's centers of hunting and steeplechase, I find my calendar full of chances to observe and record this fascinating subject and the rich landscape that is its backdrop.
Portraits
A recent portrait I found particularly engaging was a posthumous commission to paint Mr. Robert Nichols, a beloved teacher and lacrosse coach at Friends School of Baltimore. The enthusiastic contributions of photographic material and anecdotes gave me a deep sense of responsibility to communicate this man's presence. I ended up inadvertently completing two versions as different compositions competed for my preference to the very end. The result was a version for the commissioning alumni and one for the subject's family.
Plein Air
I recently rediscovered watercolor as a medium. Particularly for plein air work. I took along a small box on a trip that did not allow for my usual equipment and was surprised and excited about the results. I look forward to continuing to explore the medium.
